Forever Girls and Boys
Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin, 2012
"I`m young as morning and fresh as dew"-Maya Angelou
Like the Japanese concept of 'Kawaii' I often incorporate elements of childhood into my art. Boys and girls mainly in middle
childhood and pre teen years are the focus of these paintings. I have appropriated images from 'kidswear' catalogues and kids'
lifestyle magazines and reworked their artificiality by painting loosely and intuitively with water based paints. In these works I am not separating the boys from the girls! They are a kind of celebration of the wonder years when all children are part of the 'gang'.
There is a slightly unsettled quality in these painted scenarios in that the children are contrived from idealized catalogue models
and they seem to exist in an uspecified time and place.
Perhaps they are frozen in the past in the land of their youth, on one long summer day!.
